The new facility is separated into two distinct areas. The first is the new 132/111kv substation for UKPN at the north end of the building providing space for 2 x 132/11kv transformers and associated cooling switchgear and other ancillary equipment. The remainder of the building allows the client to ultimately house 6 generators and associated switchgear, together with cooling equipment on the upper levels to enable the future expansion of the Docklands Technical Centre. At ground level the building is wrapped in insulated metal panel and terracotta systems for aesthetic reasons to relate the surrounding building context.Above ground level the building is wrapped in powder coated louvres to act as visual screen to the plant equipment and to provide free air ventilation to the plant areas. The building is set in a newly landscaped site. Plant and tree selection matches local flora varieties.ARCMC achieved planning approval after successful negotiations with English Heritage on the old graving dock beneath the building.
